Five New Year's Resolutions to Advance Your English

What a year it has been! 2020 has been a challenging and important year. You probably have had some difficult times. But, maybe, you have also had time to reflect. And perhaps you decided to finally dedicate your time to advancing your English abilities.

As we all look forward to a fresh start, here are five resolutions to boost your English language skills in 2021!

1. Watch the daily news

Local news programs are the best option. They will update you about what is going on right in your own community.

Pay close attention to the different segments. What vocabulary items do the newscasters use when they are reporting on the weather? On sports? This is an easy way to stay informed and exercise your receptive English skills.

2. Listen to the radio at least 30 min a day

On your way to work? Why not turn on the local radio station and see what’s on the Billboard Hits Chart?

Listening to music is an excellent way to practice your English pronunciations that is fun and stress-free!

Want more to also practice English word recognition? Make it interactive with the Lyrics Training app.

Carefully focus on the lyrics of the song and fill in the missing word. Challenge a friend and make a game out of it!

3. Pick a new vocabulary word every day

Try learning a new word at the start of each day. Then, throughout the day, experiment by using it in your daily conversations.

Get a Word-of-the-Day calendar or follow Merriam-Webster’s Learner’s dictionary on Facebook or Twitter for free!

You can even sign up for the Learner's Word of the Day email.

4. Make a friend

The best way to enhance your conversational competence is to chat with a friend! Don’t know any native English speakers? Make a new friend. Or check your local library!

Libraries will often host English conversation groups for free. Because of COVID, many of the groups have transitioned online. Chat in English virtually, from the comfort of your couch!

It's easy to find your local library using this site.

5. Take a class

Maybe you need a classroom and teacher to improve your English. How about a class focused on you and your needs?

At Amidon Studios, we offer group classes and private lessons to fit your schedule in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

Want to improve your American English accent? Sign up for our American English Pronunciation class.

Do you use English at work? Take our Business English class.

Want to feel more confident speaking? Check out an English conversation class.

Start 2021 with a fun, supportive space to learn English at Amidon Studios.
