About the event
Looking for a fun day trip this summer? Then cross the border with us for a cultural walking tour of Tijuana! You'll visit several famous sites that range from the gastronomic to historical to cultural.
Locations on this tour include:
CECUT - The Centro Cultural de Tijuana is a huge center that houses art galleries, an IMAX theater, aquariam, planetarium, and the Museo de las Californias. (It's the domed building in the photo at top.) Right now there's a neat folk art exhibit on the Mexican Revolution happening when we visit.
Mercado Hidalgo - A large traditional market with tons of tropical fruit, vegetables, spices, leather goods, piñatas, candies, pottery, and much much more. You have to see it all to believe it!
La Casa del Túnel Art Center - Originally the entrance to an underground tunnel across the border, this is now a lively arts center run by the director of the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. The rooftop offers 360-degree views of Tijuana and San Ysidro.
Restaurante autentico - Along the way are many delicious (and cheap) taquerías and Baja seafood spots. We'll stop at one that hits the spot!
Zona Rio - We'll spending most of our time in the cultural heart of Tijuana. Zona Rio has a great mix of local restaurants, art centers, markets, and breweries.
Zona Centro - While we won't go to the super touristy area, we will be passing through the urban center of downtown Tijuana, where you'll see lots local folks hanging out at mom and pop shops, taquerías, and more.
This trip includes:
- Historical and cultural sightseeing tour
- Bilingual tour guide
- Entrance fees
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Policy
To enter Tijuana and to re-enter the U.S., U.S. citizens must have a Passport, Passport Card, Enhanced Driver's License, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST Card. Non-U.S. Citizens need a passport, with an I-94 departure record and multiple entry visa or Permanent Resident Card.
Some places in Tijuana accept cash only, and while many places accept dollar bills less than $20, they will give change back in Mexican pesos at the exchange rate of their choosing. So it's highly recommended to exchange your dollars for pesos at a currency exchange place next to Las Americas before crossing the border to Tijuana. We will stop at the currency exchange place before crossing the border.
This tour involves moderate level of activity, including walking across the border and at various sites. You will get your steps in on this tour!
