You didn't learn how to do this in school

It was a list of all these science-backed ways to effectively study something.

And to see it published on a popular site saying that studies have proven these approaches to work, that's where the laughter came in.

Well, now you know that everything I recommend for becoming fluent in your target language is science-backed. 😉

Here's what studying your target language effectively looks like...can you relate?

1. Less reading, more recall.

We say this all the time. Review your notes for 10 minutes. But spend the rest of the day putting into practice what you've learned.

That includes quizzing yourself about new your target language words and expressions.

2. Active listening

That doesn't mean just passively writing down notes. That means being engaged with what you're learning in your target language and asking questions.

3. Mix it up

Mixing up your target language learning with passive and active approaches improves your skills.

Passive can be listening to music or watching TV.

Active may be talking with a native speaker or taking your target language class.

4. Stretch it out

Stretch out how long you're studying your target language for.

Instead of doing everything in one 60-minute lump, break it up into shorter, intensive studying with longer breaks, like a day, in between.

5. Get active

Put your newfound target language skills to the test—go out there and use them in real life!
